Grahamstown was founded as a military outpost by Lieutenant Colonel John Graham in 1812. Home to over 40 religious buildings, Grahamstown is affectionately known as the 'City of the Saints'.

Since Minister of Arts and Culture, Nathi Mthetwa announced that Grahamstown is to be changed to Makhanda, a long-standing debate between those for and against the name change re-surfaced.
