The town is best known for the Grahamstown Arts Festival. The Arts Festival has become the premiere showcase for South African visual arts, music, theatre and dance.
Grahamstown is also home to Rhodes University, one of South Africa's top universities.
Spending a day viewing the towns spectacular churches is a worthwhile past time, especially the Anglican Cathedral of St Michael and St George. Situated in the town square and completed in 1952, it replaced the much simpler Georgian parish church. It is also the only church in Africa boasting the ring of ten bells.
